Butts Family Endowed Scholarship

Family creates scholarship in memory of longtime student advocate.. -WSU Insider, April 2021

The Butts Family Endowed Scholarship was established in memory of Susan L. Butts, a dedicated employee with WSU’s Student Involvement Office.  She was the Finance and Budget Manager, but invested in all aspects of the office and affiliated students.  Sadly, Susan passed away on January 4, 2020 following open-heart surgery.  The loss was tragic to her family and to her WSU family, in particular the Student Involvement office and students. Susan’s father, Larry E. Butts, earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering at WSU in 1959 and 1960.  Her sister, Sally R. Butts, earned her Bachelor’s degree at WSU in Natural Resource Sciences – Wildlife Biology in 1994.  Her mother, Patricia, worked at Regents Hall as a switchboard operator in the late 1950’s and is a graduate of nearby Lewis-Clark State College where Susan also graduated.  The entire family are dedicated WSU football fans and attended home games together for decades.  The Butts family are known for their service to others, generosity, and genuine care for their community.

2022 Recipient

Daniela Carvajal Macias

Daniela Carvajal Macias is a first-generation student that is determined to serve the community of Washington State University. Previously she has become involved in ASWSU Senate, Pre-Law Society Club, MECHA, Asian Pacific American Student Coalition, Black Student Union, Student Mentor for the MSS, Mariposas Poderosas, and Crimson Group. She plans to stay involved in all of the Registered Student Organizations, but will most be involved with the ASWSU Executive Branch; serving as the Executive Director of Legislative Affairs. Daniela will also be serving as the Vice-President of the Pre-Law Society Club. As the oldest of four, she hopes to inspire her siblings to pursue higher education. Daniela is currently a senior on track to get a degree in Pre-Law Political Science with a double minor in Spanish and Woman Studies. Daniela hopes to attend law school after undergrad to pursue a law degree.

Scholarship Selection Criteria

This scholarship is intended for someone who:

  • Is majoring in Natural Sciences or Engineering.
  • Serves as an officer in a Chartered Organization with the Center for Student Organizations and Leadership (previously Student Involvement).
  • Serves as a student employee of the Center for Student Organizations and Leadership (previously Student Involvement).

This student also must  demonstrate:

  • A minimum of 45 earned credits at WSU
  • Member/participant in a Registered Student Organization.

Students interested in the scholarship need to complete the WSU general scholarship application. A committee consisting of staff and students within Student Affairs convene in mid/late spring to select one student who will receive a $1,000 scholarship for the next academic year.
